omg time and time again, i find myself in disbelief by the origin of brands, so now it's YOUR turn to be surprised muahaha 🫡🏻🫡🏻 ok so here's a little game: below i compiled a list of 40 brands, and ur task is to guess whether or not the brand is local (i.e. originates from msia). AND bonus, if u dont think it's from msia, guess the country of origin. once u make ur guess, click each of the dropdowns to reveal the answer. feel free to keep track of ur score if u wish HAHAHA aight glhf 😈😈

1. tealive (bubble tea)

yepp MALAYSIAN!! i guess that's an easy start la heh. but tealive is actually pretty big rn (all over SEA and even dah ada kat australia, canada, uk, UAE, etc.), with several sources saying there are 1000+ outlets globally WHICH IS ACTUALLY INSANEE

2. chupa chups (lollipop)

nope, spanish. the name of the brand comes from the word chupar which means suck in spanish :P

3. lipton (tea)

nopess scottish, founded by sir thomas johnstone lipton

4. vitagen (cultured milk drink)

malaysiannnn hoorayyy

5. yakult (cultured milk drink)

11. maggi (instant noodles)

maggi... is from... SWITZERLAND. FRICKING SWITZERLAND. FOUNDED BY A SWISS GUY NAMED JULIUS MAGGI (what a name LMAO). how do ik this? basically haritu when i was going for the mbl camp in poland, we had like a cultural night so i wanted to bring stuff from my country to share abt with others laa AND WHAT BETTER THING TO BRING THAN MAGGI AMIRITE??? ONLY TO FIND OUT MAGGI IS NOT EVEN MSIAN AAAAJSKDKFMG. i still brought maggi mug tho and shared it on the last night (all-nighter) with a friend and didnt tell her abt the true dark disappointing origin of maggi. ey bodola why r all our iconic msian stuff like maggi and milo not even msian to begin with πŸ™„πŸ’”πŸ’”

19. the manhattan fish market (restaurant)

ya nama dia manhattan but it's malaysian bro HAIH. i guess good call tho cuz no one would eat there if it were called "malaysian fish market" AHAHAHA

20. sugus (candy)

it's SWISS oh my goodness

21. proton (car)

MALAYSIAN LA OFC. KALAU KAU SALAH SMH ARE U RLLY MSIAN??? 😑😑🀬🀬

22. miniso (store)

well i'll tell u that it's not msian. so ahh that must mean it's japanese la kan? SIKE NO IT'S CHINESE BUT PRESENTS ITSELF AS JAPANESE AAAJJSJDF BRUHH. and yk what, a few years ago my family went to japan pastu at some point my brother kut (tak ingat) nak pergi cari miniso but HAHH GUESS WHAT there's not a SINGLE miniso in japan dude and that's how i found out IT'S FRICKING CHINESEEEEE FOR GOD'S SAKE 😭😭

23. horlicks (drink)

nopeee, invented by two british brothers (james n william horlick - why r their names the most stereotypical british names ever) in the US

AHAHAHA and okay ya it actually IS "roizu" but they just englishified it and yea i think u'd agree w me that "royce" is not a vry japanese-looking word JDJDFJSJ. OH but it's interesting how they got the name: basically the founder's first name is yasuhiro. reverse the characters -> rohisuya, and "ya" is a suffix for shop in jpnese so that leaves rohisu -> roizu!! 🀯🀯

35. darlie (toothpaste)

okay so yes u may hv been able to make the reasonable guess that darlie is, in fact, not msian. BUT would u have been able to guess its dark history... πŸ’€πŸ’€ so once upon a time, the toothpaste was not called darlie but... darkie (a racial slur against african-americans) and featured a white man in blackface + a top hat. so ahh probably from the states (which was racially segregated at the time) right?? BUT SIKE NOPE ONCE AGAIN IT'S CHINESE 😭😭😭 and in chinese the toothpaste is (till today) called 黑人牙膏 (which directly translates to "black man toothpaste") AAAHSJDJF yea i think i learnt this info from one of my chinese friends. apparently the name is not rooted in racism tho but bcs ppl associated black ppl w white teeth (since their skin was dark, making their teeth look whiter). but later it became controversial in the US (wow who wdve guessed!!), so baru the english name was changed to darlie. HA THE MORE YOU KNOW 🌈✨

36. fruit plus (candy)

malaysian hoorayyy

37. 4fingers (chicken)

singaporean, it's called 4fingers cuz the founders believed ppl typically need 4 main fingers on each hand to enjoy their chicken πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

38. julie's (biscuit)
